Plus Why Microneedling and Botox Complement Each Other

There are so many options out there for rejuvenating the skin that it can get overwhelming. Today we are going to take a look at the differences between microneedling and Botox to help dispel some of the anxiety you might be feeling over deciding what options are right for you. So let’s jump right in!

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling may sound scary but it’s actually a great treatment for many skin types and issues. It is non-invasive and uses very thin, small needles to create micro-injuries to the skin. You might be asking, “So how does creating tiny injuries on my skin help treat skin issues and rejuvenate my skin?” Great question! The answer is that it starts your body’s natural healing process that produces collagen and elastin, both of which are proteins that make your skin stronger, tighter and younger looking by eliminating fine lines and wrinkles. And because it starts up the natural healing process, it can also be used to treat a variety of skin issues such as acne scarring, skin pigmentations, stretch marks and even hair loss.

What is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxin protein that temporarily causes paralysis of the muscles. This means that Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles (like those created when you squint or frown). Over time, this also helps with anti-aging because it is those repeated expressions that contribute to fine lines and wrinkles. Botox can also be used to treat other issues, such as migraines, excessive sweating and muscle disorders.

How are the Treatments Similar?

Both microneedling and Botox use needles and treat the signs of aging. For Botox, the needle is used to inject the solution into the treatment areas. For microneedling, a device or pen containing the needle will create those thousands of micro-injuries on your skin.

How are They Different?

While they both use needles, how they work is different. Botox is injected into the desired treatment areas to smooth the skin while microneedling treats the skin itself. And while you aren’t getting injected with a solution during a microneedling treatment like is required with Botox, your esthetician may spread serums or other treatments over your skin to take advantage of those micro-injuries and get the treatments absorbed deeper into your skin. One such example is microneedling plus PRP (platelet rich plasma). For this treatment, your blood will be drawn and processed down to the plasma. Then your own plasma, full of healing white blood cells, is spread over the skin after the microneedle treatment. This helps to boost your body’s healing process by bringing more white blood cells to the treatment areas. Microneedling plus PRP is also often used for hair loss treatments.

Botox and microneedling also differ in how long results last. Botox requires life-long maintenance with treatments needed every three to six months to keep the desired effects. Microneedling does require multiple sessions, but results generally last longer, depending on what the patient is seeking. Microneedling treatments are recommended every six to nine months. The time it takes to see results is different as well. The result of Botox is immediate while microneedling takes a few months to see the full results with some results seen immediately. This is because the microneedling stimulates the body to rejuvenate the skin and this “healing” process can take some time.

Why Microneedling and Botox Complement Each Other

If your goal is anti-aging, Botox and microneedling complement each other quite nicely. They both treat fine lines and wrinkles, but they work differently, allowing you to utilize both treatments in an anti-aging regimen. Botox strengthens the lower layers of your skin while microneedling improves the surface of your skin.

Microneedling provides other benefits to Botox treatments including decreasing the healing time for both procedures and microneedling also helps in reducing the risk of infection, bruising, skin discoloration, as well as permanent damage or injury to the skin.
